Evergreen Refreshments Adds Autonomous Retail to Washington College Campus

Evergreen Refreshments and 365 Retail Markets have opened a checkout-free store at Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, Washington, using Amazon's Just Walk Out technology. The autonomous store, located in the college's cafeteria, integrates Just Walk Out with the 365 Retail Markets platform Evergreen already uses for its campus operations, keeping catalog management, payment processing and reporting inside 365. Shoppers enter with a payment card, mobile wallet or the 365Pay app, and Just Walk Out technology detects which products they take from or return to shelves, building a virtual cart. When they walk out, the system charges their selected payment method. Jeff Dumbrell, chief revenue officer at 365 Retail Markets, said the autonomous format lets students get a full retail experience with no lines and extended hours. The store processes more transactions at once, cutting lost sales and abandoned carts during peak periods, and provides a consistent shopping option during hours the campus previously covered with vending machines or nothing at all. For operators, the deployment is a template for extending an existing micro market business into full autonomous retail on the same platform. 365 Retail Markets, a member of Amazon's Just Walk Out Certified Partner Network, managed the store's design, installation, camera calibration and gate setup, and serves as Evergreen's first line of support, with Amazon handling escalated technology and hardware issues.
